Started recycling research from 10kg… chicken bones

Usually animal bones, shells, oyster shells, if reused, are only used as animal feed or thrown away, but 3 female students K64, Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, School of Chemistry and Life Sciences , Hanoi University of Science and Technology: Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, Tran Ha My, Vu Thi Huyen Trang, under the guidance of teacher Dr. Dinh Quang Hung - has diligently researched to recycle those wastes to create new supplies for medicine and other fields.

The research project entitled: Research and manufacture of Calcium Hydorxyapatite from discarded animal bones, shells and oyster shells won the first prize in the Science and Environment division with the research topic: Calcium hydroxyapatite is an important ingredient. of bones, teeth, and has wide applications in medicine and other fields.

3 female students started their research from March 2022. From "waste", a group of Hanoi Polytechnic students created Calcium hydroxyapatite with the following applications:

- Potential applications in medicine: Calcium hydroxyapatite is a major component of bones and teeth, so the production of Calcium hydroxyapatite from waste resources such as animal bones, seashells and oyster shells has great potential in the field of medicine. medical field. It can be used to make products such as bone grafts, implant abutment surfaces and repair materials for bone damage.

- Minimize waste: Using discarded animal bones, shells and oyster shells as raw materials for the production of Calcium hydroxyapatite helps to reduce the amount of waste generated by the marine animal industry and the seafood processing industry. seafood, helping to reduce the negative impact on the environment and natural resources.

- Create a new and sustainable supply: The use of waste resources such as animal bones, seashells and oyster shells to make Calcium hydroxyapatite opens up a new and sustainable supply source for the material manufacturing industry. medical. helps reduce dependence on traditional sources such as calcium from limestone and helps maintain a balance of natural resources.

- Wide Application Potential: Calcium hydroxyapatite is a material with good biocompatibility and tissue compatibility. Therefore, making Calcium hydroxyapatite from waste resources can not only have applications in medicine, but also in other fields such as biotechnology, materials manufacturing, and many other applications.

Received the first prize at the University of Science Research Student Conference, the 3 girls were very happy, grateful to their instructors for their enthusiastic guidance and guidance. Memorable memories during the research process are like slow motion movies in the members' heads at that time: Remember the times when teachers and students were flexible and overcame difficulties to analyze samples because the analytical methods were not popular. and not available; Remember the "super big" 10kg chicken bone bag the instructor brought to the group in the first session of the experiment; Remember the days when I went to beg for oyster shells at snail shops or pick up beef bones at pho restaurants, shyly stammering and stammering. Fortunately, the shop owners enthusiastically agreed to let "students eager to learn"…

“What we are most interested in is that the team's scientific research also contributes to reducing negative impacts on the environment and natural resources, creating more sustainable production processes and materials. By taking advantage of available natural resources and minimizing waste, Hanoi Polytechnic students have contributed to sustainable development and environmental protection.” - 3 "cassava" Encyclopedia: Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, Tran Ha My, Vu Thi Huyen Trang proudly share.

Research to create new "super organic" materials

The research group consisted of 5 girls: Bui Bich Hao, Hoang Phuong Mai, Ngo Thi Nhai, Nguyen Thi Nhat, Nguyen Thi Thao - K64 Yarn Technology class, Institute of Textiles - Footwear & Fashion, School of Materials. Under the guidance of teachers: Assoc. Nguyen Minh Tuan and Master Cao Thi Hoai Thuy, the team has succeeded in a highly interdisciplinary scientific research, producing a new super "organic" material from banana fiber. The research project won the first prize at the university level at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology Student Conference in 2023.

Banana is a plant with a very large area in Vietnam, most of the banana trees after harvesting the fruit are cut down and naturally decomposed into fertilizer, a few are used as livestock feed. cattle. Banana fiber is also not too strange, raw banana fiber is mainly used for handicrafts and there are also studies on banana fiber but it is still not optimized, not applied much, leading to not being able to take advantage of it. Most of the waste products from banana stem cause environmental pollution problems.

“We think we can create a new type of fiber from commonly used banana fiber like cotton - a green, sustainable material in the textile industry. The topic of research and development of the technology of cotton, spinning, weaving some banana fiber "was born like that" - Hoang Phuong Mai said.

Starting research from July 2022, 5 girls proudly overcame challenges when experimenting with cooking methods to treat banana fiber. The team had to re-test many times, encountering countless failures.

In order to get the optimal plan, with the guidance and support from the instructors, the female students studied domestic and foreign documents on the processing processes of banana fiber acacia, then apply to practical conditions the equipment, tools and test materials available at the laboratory of the Institute of Textiles - Footwear & Fashion, School of Materials.

The research team's process of cooking the experimental glue separation lasted for a whole day, the whole group was tired, but the teacher Minh Tuan and Ms. Hoai Thuy "launched a lifesaver" when encouraging and wholeheartedly guided, both The group studied documents, experimental methods and analyzed experimental data obtained, both to gain professional understanding and to plan for each task when assigned. "The encouragement and instructions of the teachers have given us the motivation and confidence to not be afraid of difficulties, to be afraid of suffering, to accept failure and then continue to strive to achieve the desired results" - The girls Sincere girls share.

At the Hanoi University of Science and Technology Student Exhibition 2023, 5 girls from the School of Materials proudly introduced their highly interdisciplinary product: Fabrics woven from cotton banana fiber. In order to complete the research topic and produce exhibition products, the female students have learned more knowledge about Chemistry, have connections with the field of Mechanical Engineering... - new knowledge for Textile students lucky. The more they learn, the more girls are interested in the interdisciplinary nature when participating in scientific research.

“That is the characteristic of students of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. We have the opportunity to learn, practice interdisciplinary knowledge, open up new research ideas in the future” – Bui Bich Hao said.

The upcoming scientific research ideas will be: Studying the dyeing process of woven fabrics with warp yarn of 100% silk Nm44, weft yarn of OE banana/cotton 70/30 Nm24 with natural color materials; Study the process and technological parameters of the equipment used to spin 100% banana fiber by the pot - ring - pile method; Research on process and technological parameters of shuttleless weaving equipment using 100% banana fiber.

Holding green woven products in the color of young banana leaves, the faces of female students from the School of Materials, Hanoi University of Science and Technology shine with pride and happiness.
